Carolyn Ando – Receptionist

Best bit about your job?

The best bit about my job is meeting the service users and talking to their families, especially ones I have known for a long time; it is really special.

My job is very diverse and it’s great when everything goes according to plan! No two days are the same, which is really good.

It is also rewarding knowing that at the end of the day I can go home and know that I have helped someone.

Worst bit about your job?

Dealing with sales and marketing calls can be difficult as we are registered with the Corporate Telephone Preference Service; you have to remain patient when dealing with these queries.

Where will you be in five years?

I’ve always wanted to work with children with Down Syndrome and I would like to work with a family to offer respite for a few hours to give parents or carers a break.

Advice for anyone wanting to do your job?

Be prepared to wear many hats in the course of one day; from agony aunt to the oracle of all knowledge!

How did you get this job?

I heard Freeways were advertising for a Clerk/telephonist and applied but unfortunately was unsuccessful because at that time I didn’t have any admin experience.  Three days later, I received a phone call from the office manager inviting me for a second interview with the Chief Executive because the successful applicant found it difficult to work with adults with learning difficulties.  I was successful and I am still here 16 years later.

What did you want to be when you were young?

From an early age I knew I wanted to work with children and before I left school I helped a neighbour with her two young children. When I left school I trained to be a nursery nurse, a job I enjoyed immensely until I joined Freeways.
